Neighborhood
Park City, a mere ½ hour drive from Salt Lake City, is an historic old mining town transformed into a world class ski and winter sports destination. Snuggled into a high valley in the craggy Wasatch Range mountains, this charming town is lined with miners’ cabins and buildings built during the silver mining boom that started in the 1860’s. The first ski resort opened in 1963. A film festival tradition started in 1970 when Park City hosted its first City Art Festival, followed in 1981 with the US Film and Video Festival. It now hosts the world-famous Sundance Film Festival. This area has become one of the finest ski resorts in the world. In 2002 Park City hosted the Winter Olympic Games. It is now home to the Utah Olympic Park, one of only 4 sliding tracks in North America, with ski jumps, and the Winter Olympics Museum. It is the official training facility for the US Olympic Ski Team so you know the snow conditions are great. The ski resorts include Park City Mountain, Deer Valley Resort, Canyons Village at Park City and the soon to open Mayflower resort. Dry snow and deep powder attracts skiers from all over the world. Ski season typically starts in the fall around mid-November and goes until spring in mid-April. It varies each year due to weather conditions. For about 10 days in mid-January, the area comes alive with the Sundance Film Festival. Originally conceived in 1981 by actor and filmmaker Robert Redford as a venue for new creative artists to present their talent to a live audience, it has grown and thrives today. New documentary, narrative feature and both US and International short films are exhibited during the festival. Summer in Park City is just as much fun. The Olympic Park offers Alpine sliding, Zip lines, Drop Tower, Airbag Jumps, and scenic chairlifts. Mountain biking, fishing the local streams, boating on the Jordanelle, and mountain hiking are all popular in the mild weather of the Summer. Summer also brings lots of events like the “Big Stars Bright Nights Concert Series” and “Park Silly Sunday Market.” Year-round the historic Old Town, is a great place to shop, dine and party. It is a culinary hotspot, home to over 100 restaurants and eateries. There is everything from award-winning restaurants, international cuisine to quaint pubs with live entertainment. There is fun for everyone in Park City. Come see for yourself.
